Network in Focus with Martin Gilje Jaatun from SINTEF: What is cyber security, and why does it matter to your company?

In this network meeting, Martin Gilje Jaatun from SINTEF will explain what cyber security is and why it matters to your company. After an introduction to cyber security, he will give guidelines on how your company can secure itself from cyber-attacks, thereby saving both money, time, and the disclosure of sensitive information. 

Small companies at risk

The digitalization of society has changed how we work. Most companies, regardless of their sector, are already using digital tools, which urges stricter measures to be taken regarding their digital safety. The cyber threat is dynamic, meaning that hackers and scammers are improving their methods simultaneously as security countermeasures evolve. Yesterday’s measures are not necessarily secure enough for future attacks. 

Norwegian business leaders have expressed how cyber-attacks are among their biggest concerns. It is a common assumption that big companies are more prone to experience cyber-attacks, but in reality, it is small companies that experience the greatest risk.

According to Microsoft, 70% of the registered cyber-attacks were targeted against small companies. All it takes for the entire company’s system to be shut down, is that one employee opens a single link one time. 

About Martin Gilje Jaatun: 
Martin Gilje Jaatun is a Senior Scientist at SINTEF Digital in Trondheim, Norway. He holds a Dr.Philos degree in critical information infrastructure security from the University of Stavanger, where he now is an adjunct professor. Jaatun is works as an editor for several scientific journals. His previous positions include scientist at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) and  Senior Lecturer in information security at the Bodø Graduate School of Business. His research interests include software security, security in cloud computing, and security of critical information infrastructures. He is vice chairman of the Cloud Computing Association (cloudcom.org), vice chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Cloud Computing (TCCLD), an IEEE Cybersecurity Ambassador, an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Visitor, an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Contributor, and a Senior Member of the IEEE.
