Benefits of Industry 4.0 for Manufacturing Industries

Workshop

Digital transformation provides manufacturers and their suppliers many benefits such as increased productivity, better efficiency, higher revenues and improved innovation. Yet, many companies lack a digital strategy with strong focus on the technological implementation. This workshop focuses on the introduction of major topics in Smart Manufacturing such as networked production, big data and data analytics, as well as the use of smart devices such as glasses and tablets. The workshop is practice-oriented with interactive discussions on real case examples and practical exercises tailored to the needs of the participants. The overall aim of the workshop is to familiarize the participants with a methodical approach to setting up an individualized digitalization roadmap for the upcoming years.

The target group of this workshop is representatives of Norwegian industry tasked with developing and implementing Smart Manufacturing strategies in their respective companies. The number of participants is limited to maximum 30.

Agenda

08.00: Coffee and registration

08.30: Short introduction to Smart Manufacturing

  • Svein Terje Strandlie and Odd Myklebust, Sintef Manufacturing
  • Clemens Müller, Fraunhofer IPT

08.50: Interactive discussion on the current state of Industry 4.0 in Norwegian                                         industry. Reference to European and German Industries. What are the challenges?

  • Odd Myklebust, Sintef Manufacturing, Clemens Müller, Fraunhofer IPT

09.20: Data analytics for production processes

  • Georg Muntingh, Sintef Digital Clemens Müller and Dennis Grunert, Fraunhofer IPT
Data are so much more than simply using an algorithm: data needs to be obtained, structured, understood and put to use. The workshop will give an introduction into data analytics, the necessary processes and procedures, as well as software and algorithms. Different data sources within the shop floor are discussed and different means of data gathering and storage introduced.

10.20: The Human Aspects

  • Gaute Knutstad, Sintef Manufacturing

11.00:  Coffee break

11.20:  Benefits of Smart glasses and tablets

  • Ådne Solhaug Linnerud, Sintef Manufacturing
  • Clemens Müller and Dennis Grunert, Fraunhofer IPT
  • Use Cases and discussions
Smart devices such as glasses or tablets may yield major benefits on the shop floor due to a real-time connection from IT systems and machines to the worker that delivers decision-relevant information.

12.20: Lunch

12.50: Pitfalls and best practices

  •  Ragnhild J. Eleftheriadis and Odd Myklebust, SINTEF Manufacturing

13.20: Methodical approach to an individualized, digital roadmap

  • Clemens Müller and Dennis Grunert, Fraunhofer IP
The roadmap consists of an initial assessment of processes and IT landscape, gap derivation as a benchmark to the state of the art as well as the planning and prioritization of the most beneficial steps for the strategic roadmap, which then serve as future implementation plan.

14.05: Concluding remarks on the way forward and evaluation of the workshop

  • Odd Myklebust, Sintef Manufacturing
